Ten Questions with Theresa Pulido

Welcome to National Craft Month! To start it off right, Theresa Pulido, author of Hook, Loop and Lock and Locking Loops has answered ten questions about crafting, locker hooking and more. To find out what inspires Theresa, her tips for beginning locker hookers, and how you can win a signed copy of her latest book, read on.

1. When did you start crafting? What craft did you start with?
I loved to craft when I was a child. I’m guessing I was around eleven. I liked working with felt and created felt hand puppets that I hand-stitched and embellished.

2. What other crafts do you do besides locker hooking?
I like painting. I love to sew clutch style purses and handbags. I have made jewelry. I like knitting and recently started crocheting.

3. What made you decide to write Locking Loops?
After writing Hook, Loop & Lock, I had so many tips and creative ideas, including new techniques, that I wanted to share. I had also accumulated quite a few new designs. It just seemed natural to write another book to share what I had learned and created.

4. What is the best part about writing a book? What is the most difficult?
I love choosing the designs for the book and doing photography. I think the most difficult part is writing the instructions and creating the patterns so that they make sense for the reader.

5. How do you get inspired when you’re feeling a lack of creativity?
I rarely feel uninspired these days. My garden inspires me a lot. Anything colorful or in a unique color combination is inspirational. I love design so I’m always looking for inspiration from something unique in architecture, sculpture or fashion. You can also find so much inspiration in nature. I keep a sketchbook with design ideas so anytime anything pops into my head I sketch it so I can revisit it later.

6. What is the skill or technique that most intimidates you?
Painting. I’m not sure I’m very good and I want to be great at it. I wish I had more time to devote to it.

7. What’s the best advice you could give to a new locker-hooking enthusiast?
Start with something small like a trivet and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s a craft that can be learned quickly if you just practice a bit. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to create using your favorite fabrics, yarns and accents.

8. What’s your favorite craft blog, and why?
I like Where Women Create because I can relate to it. It’s inspirational.

9. What tool, notion or material can you not live without?
Gosh, this is tough. I can’t be without my locker hook, but I also can’t do much if I don’t have access to beautiful fabrics and fibers.

10. How has locker hooking changed your life?
It has allowed me to express my creativity and live my dream. I can work from home and take time out to create. Love it!
