It's football season; and here in the South, college football is a way of life. Saturdays from August through December are full of gameday celebrations with family and friends from sun-up to sun-down. I love football, but I usually take a project along with me to fill the long hours on the couch when I'm not (A) eating, or (B) screaming for my team.
This year, I stitched up a felt needlebook for myself just for taking along on long football Saturdays. I'm a graduate of the University of Alabama, where we love all things elephants and houndstooth! My needlebook is going to be perfect all season long for working on embroidery projects on the couch.
This needlebook project was originally featured in issue #130 of Sew Beautiful magazine, and is still available on the SB website as a free download; but I reworked it in my team's colors/prints and added an elephant appliqué and a ribbon closure. The instructions and elephant template are available for you right here in a downloadable PDF. Use my elephant design or come up with your own; stitch a decorative front cover in any color or style that suits you.
Here is a guide to materials used in my sample. Several materials used to make this felt needlebook are available in our online shop, and those are linked for easy access.
For needlebook:
> 1 piece red wool felt
> 1 piece white wool felt
> Fifi Fido cream/black houndstooth fabric (enough for a piece 6" x 11" and 6" x 6")
> Thin cotton batting 6" x 11" (I used Warm & White)
> Two 6" pieces of 5/8" silk satin ribbon, black
> Glue baste
> Coordinating sewing thread
For elephant applique:
> Scrap of houndstooth fabric
> Lite Steam-A-Seam 2
> Ecru embroidery floss
> Red button
